Principal Electronics Design Engineer

A senior role in design with responsibility for the delivery of innovative and cost effective design and test solutions, on time and on budget, which meet or exceed customer requirements.

* Establish/negotiate and fully document clear technical requirements through liaison with internal and external stakeholders
* Actively participate in the planning and resource estimation for new projects
* Liaise throughout the project with customer and suppliers as required
* Take ownership for technical risk management and mitigation. Proactively alert peers, project teams and management of any risks and potential mitigation actions
* Create design concepts, schematics and associated specifications, review packs and validation strategies
* Carry out verification and validation testing, and support factory acceptance testing
* Ensure all design changes are fully documented, approved, correctly released and appropriately stored/archived
* Conduct peer reviews and support formal design reviews
* Carry out electronics cooling simulation modelling (training provided where necessary)
* Conduct DFMEA (design failure mode effects & analysis) reviews
* Work closely with production engineers to ensure design is optimised for manufacture
* Ensure that all design work is cost optimised in accordance with product BOM cost targets and development labour budget
* Identify and implement opportunities to improve design process robustness/efficiency
* Ensure lessons learned are captured and applied
* Provide support as required to junior designers and sub contract designers
* Be on hand in Production during prototype builds to ensure that any issues are swiftly resolved
* Proactively alert management of any potential cost/time savings (or overruns) that may impact project margin.

Qualifications, Experience And Skills:

* Electronics related degree – significant demonstrable experience may be considered in lieu
* Highly proficient in the design and layout (ideally using Altium) of innovative, high-reliability, power-efficient electronic circuits for use in demanding environments
* In depth understanding of the principles of designing for success in EMC testing
* Experience of designing PCB assemblies with JTAG interfaces
* Experience of electronics packaging design
* Experience of working with various micro controllers and associated micro code
* Experience of designing for test
* Experience of designing functional test and establishing and documenting test coverage
* Experience of analogue circuit design for sensors and interfaces
* Able to identify and assess power/battery solutions for demanding environments
* Able to estimate work effort with reasonable accuracy, and finish on time without close supervision
* Pro-active problem solver and out-of-box thinker
* Attention to detail and a ‘right first time’ approach
* Willingness and desire to acquire new skills and invest in professional self-development
* Excellent communications skills with proven ability to engage and build strong working relationships in a team environment
* Act at all times in accordance with terms and conditions described in your contract of employment
* Comply with Health and Safety and Environmental policy
* Carry out any other duties that might reasonably be requested

Desirable:

* Experience of electronics cooling simulation software (ideally SolidWorks Electronics Cooling)
* Knowledge/experience of designing Intrinsically Safe circuits
* Practical LabView experience
* Experience of working with C++ and/or C for microcontrollers
* Practical exposure to software programming
* Knowledge or proven ability to interpret defence standards
* Experience in a fast-paced Aerospace or Defence Quality manufacturing environment desirable.
